This externship provides hands-on clinical exposure in a collaborative, supportive environment designed to foster learning, mentorship, and professional development while delivering high-quality patient care.

Externship Overview

Our veterinary externship program is designed for students currently enrolled in an AVMA-accredited veterinary school (or equivalent program). Externs will have the opportunity to work closely with experienced veterinarians and licensed veterinary technicians, gaining real-world clinical experience in both general practice and urgent care settings.

Externs will be encouraged to participate in all aspects of patient care appropriate to their level of training and comfort.

Compensation

This externship is an unpaid educational opportunity designed to provide veterinary students with hands-on clinical experience as part of their professional training.

Learning Opportunities

Externs may have the opportunity to:

  • Observe and assist with physical examinations
  • Participate in diagnostic workups
  • Assist in surgery and anesthesia monitoring

Educational Nature of Externship

Externs will not be used to replace or substitute for paid employees. Externs will work under direct supervision and their activities are intended solely for educational and training purposes.

Extern participation will complement, not replace, the work of employed veterinarians or staff.

Supervision and Responsibility

Externs will work under the direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian at all times.

Externs may observe and assist but will not independently diagnose, prescribe, or perform procedures except as permitted under applicable law and veterinary school guidelines.

Schedule and Duration

Externship schedules are flexible and can be tailored to meet veterinary school program requirements. Externships typically range from 2 to 8 weeks, depending on student availability and hospital scheduling.

Candidates must:

  • Be currently enrolled in an AVMA-accredited veterinary school (or equivalent program)
